Maximizing BSFL Production: A Comparative Analysis of Various Food Substrates

Maximizing BSFL Production: A Comparative Analysis of Various Food Substrates

In a recent experiment conducted by Protein Master in Nairobi, various combinations of coffee husks and other organic materials were tested to determine their effectiveness as substrates for rising Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. The goal is to find out which mix promotes the best growth and health of the larvae, which are used as a sustainable protein source for animal feed.

Four different substrate combinations were prepared:

  1. Coffee Husk Alone: This substrate was tested to see if coffee husks alone could support the growth of BSF larvae.
  2. Coffee Husk + Pig Waste: Pig waste was added to coffee husks to see if the additional nutrients would improve larvae growth.
  3. Coffee Husk + Water Hyacinth: This combination was used to test the effectiveness of mixing coffee husks with water hyacinth, a plant that often clogs waterways and can be an environmental nuisance.
  4. Coffee Husk + Kitchen Waste: Kitchen waste was mixed with coffee husks to see if this common household waste could serve as a good substrate.

After 10 days, the results were analyzed:

  • Coffee Husk Alone: This combination resulted in poor larvae growth, indicating that coffee husks alone do not provide enough nutrients for BSF larvae to thrive.
  • Coffee Husk + Pig Waste: This mix showed moderate improvement in larvae growth, suggesting that pig waste adds beneficial nutrients.
  • Coffee Husk + Water Hyacinth: The larvae showed some growth, but not as much as with pig waste, indicating that while water hyacinth adds some value, it is less effective.
  • Coffee Husk + Kitchen Waste: This combination was the most successful, resulting in healthy, well-developed larvae. Kitchen waste provided the necessary nutrients for optimal larvae growth.
