Waste Free ’23 Making Global Strides Toward Sustainable Development Goals
Waste Free ’23 (WasteFree23.org) is an all-volunteer international NGO dedicated to promoting and training people in safe, sustainable, and profitable waste management processes. Founded in 2022, Waste Free ’23 focuses on empowering the 2 billion people worldwide who live with unmanaged waste. Through various initiatives, Waste Free ’23 is contributing to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
SDG 1: No Poverty
Waste Free ’23 creates employment opportunities through its micro-recycling centers and waste management initiatives. By training individuals to manage waste effectively, Waste Free ’23 not only helps communities become cleaner but also generates jobs and economic opportunities, lifting people out of poverty.
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
Healthier living conditions are promoted through Waste Free ’23’s initiatives like SHaCK (Solar Hybrid Community Kitchen) and the Top-Lit Updraft (TLUD) stove, which reduce exposure to harmful smoke from traditional cooking methods. Additionally, the NGO’s no-burning policy improves air quality, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
By converting organic waste into biochar, Waste Free ’23 provides a sustainable way to purify water and improve soil health. The heat produced in the process of making biochar can be used to purify water, while latrine waste is efficiently turned into fertilizer, promoting safe sanitation practices.
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SHaCK and biochar production highlight Waste Free ’23’s commitment to clean energy. SHaCK utilizes solar energy for cooking, reducing reliance on wood and charcoal, which are detrimental to both health and the environment. The organization also explores biochar and syngas as renewable energy sources.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Waste Free ’23 fosters economic growth by creating jobs in recycling and product manufacturing at micro-recycling centers (MRCs). This promotes a circular economy, where waste is converted into valuable products, supporting local economies and providing stable employment.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Waste Free ’23 is pioneering new industries focused on waste conversion. The organization develops innovative recycling techniques and builds infrastructure to support sustainable waste management, turning waste into useful products and creating new economic sectors.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Through its zero-waste initiatives, Waste Free ’23 helps build sustainable communities. By reducing waste and promoting recycling, communities become cleaner, healthier, and more resilient against environmental challenges.
SDG 13: Climate Action
Waste Free ’23 takes significant steps toward climate action by eliminating the burning, dumping, and trucking of waste, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Projects like SHaCK offer pollution-free cooking solutions for institutions, contributing to a reduction in carbon footprints.
SDG 14: Life Below Water
By addressing plastic pollution, Waste Free ’23 helps protect marine life. The organization’s initiatives prevent plastic waste from entering waterways, thereby reducing ocean pollution and safeguarding aquatic ecosystems.
Waste Free ’23 continues to expand its reach and impact across the globe, demonstrating that sustainable waste management is not just an environmental necessity but also a powerful tool for social and economic development.
